A place for the work behind the business.
There’s usually a story behind each bottle. The recipe is one part of it. The decisions, experiments, people, and everyday work that bring it to life are another.
This site is a place for that second story.
I’m Kelly Darwin, founder of Ryes & Shine Craft Distillery in Langford, BC. My background as a chef is part of how I arrived here: curiosity about flavour, a willingness to experiment, and an idea that grew into something much bigger than a hobby.
What I’ll be writing about
Craft spirits and hospitality will be a starting point. I also want to make room for the business around them: developing products, creating an experience people want to return to, and the practical skills involved in building something.
Some notes will look at the industry. Others will focus on a tool, a question, or a decision worth thinking through. Ryes & Shine will provide plenty of the backdrop, but the ideas should be useful beyond the distillery.
A conversation worth having
The intention is to share the work as it unfolds, with enough detail to make it useful. There will always be more to learn.
